One of the most important and valuable aspects of performance coaching is the idea that we are all good at something. Some can present with passion, others can manage a team, some can lead, and others can sell.

When you understand what you are interested in and what you are good at, you can make fulfilling career choices and develop your talents into strengths. Developing your talents and abilities into strengths not only improves your performance, but also increases your morale and job satisfaction.

Playing to Your Strengths. Playing to your strengths is a critical component of high performance, success and achievement in virtually every field.

The best reason to play to your strengths and consciously develop your talents into strengths is that your strengths give you a huge competitive advantage and greatly enhance your probability of achieving what you want.

In The Effective Executive, management guru Peter Drucker talks about top executives who used their strengths to get ahead in their own careers. Nearly all top executives claimed that focusing on their strengths was a necessary foundation for achieving their career goals.

A "strength" is any area, skill or activity in which you can consistently perform well and excel. There are two important aspects to that definition: consistency and high performance.

In order for something to qualify as a true strength, you need to be able to deliver high quality results and to do so consistently, in a way that might seem almost effortless to an untrained eye.

Develop Your Talents. The key to developing a talent into a strength is to identify the skills, knowledge, and experience you need to use that underlying talent exceptionally well for a specific purpose, and then to consciously set out to gain those skills, knowledge and experience through a process called deliberate practice.

Most People Don't Focus On Strengths. By now you might be asking, "If focusing on your strengths is the key to achieving great results, why don't more people do it?" After all, if everyone played to their strengths, doing so wouldn't give you such a competitive advantage, would it?

That's precisely the point: most people DON'T focus on their strengths!

There are many reasons why people may not to play to their strengths, but the main reason is that they're simply not trained to. Instead, from a very young age, the public school system systematically trains most of us to ignore our strengths.

And that's precisely why playing to your strengths and developing your talents and abilities can give you an edge.
